What happened at the
II National Consultation?
The Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network (CMFN) in collaboration with the Office for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Refugees (PCMR) held the Second National Consultation on Migrant Farmworker Ministry on May 24-27, 2007 at Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska. One hundred fifty-six farmworkers, rural immigrants and pastoral agents from 31 states attended. Bishop John R. Manz, the USCCB Episcopal Liaison for the Migrant Farmworker Apostolate attended the Consultation and presided at the concluding Pentecost Liturgy and Commissioning.
Proceedings
Each participant at the Consultation shared their hopes and dreams, and discussed emerging needs within their local communities. The entire group drew up recommendations and resolutions that will give direction to CMFN and future developments in migrant ministry in the Catholic Church. Three participants, representing the western, central, and eastern parts of the country, were elected to the CMFN Board of Directors. There were times to pray together; two highlights were Morning Prayer at the ‘Wall” to commemorate all those who died crossing the border and the Pentecost Eucharistic Liturgy with Bishop Manz. Opportunities for relaxation included evening song fests, a visit to Museo Latino, and a Saturday night social complete with mariachis.
Recommendations and Resolutions
The recommendations from the participants focused on the areas of leadership development, social justice, and provision for more spiritual care for migrant farmworkers and rural immigrants. The statements expressed a need for more social services by agencies in rapidly expanding zones, and advocacy for workers’ rights centers in rural areas of the country. The recommendations will be presented to the broader church through the Catholic Bishops and other leaders. Strategies and programs will be developed from these recommendations.
